KASPAR (English Version)

/ by Peter Handke

Can a human being be brought to identity through speaking? Or as Handke says, through a speaking-torture? At the beginning Kaspar is an autistic being with an immediate and infinite relationship with everything that surrounds him. At the end Kaspar is brought to reality and he also knows what he has lost in this passage.

This story is the same for all of us. It's on the base of what we call consciousness. Sensations and words don't fit together. You can't rely on words. You can only follow your mistrust and discover that there is no end. The play shows how somebody can be brought to speak through speaking.

Finally we are all equal and much nearer as we would say. We are all Kaspar – it's just necessary to to hear exactly what's going on.
